ASK: Does this spark joy?
Choose what to keep in your home by holding each belonging and asking yourself: “Does this spark joy?” Our homes are the only places where we have complete freedom to impact how the space looks and feels. Shouldn’t we surround ourselves with only what sparks joy?
ORDER WHEN TIDYING
Follow this order when tidying: clothes, books, papers, komono, or miscellaneous items, and sentimental items. Deciding which articles of clothing spark joy for you is easier than deciding which photographs to keep. Therefore, by starting with clothing then working through books and papers, you will hone your ‘spark joy’ sensor and prepare yourself for more challenging categories.
TAKE AN ACCURATE inventory
Tidy by category instead of by place. For instance, instead of tidying a single closet, gather all of your clothing in one location from your dresser, your closet, storage containers, and even your car. Confronting all of your clothing in one place allows you to take a more accurate inventory of what you own and helps you decide what you wish to keep.
PRACTICE ACCEPTANCE FOR OTHERS
Respect what sparks joy for others, and refrain from throwing away other people’s belongings. Often, the desire to address other people’s clutter reflects a reluctance to address one’s own.
STAY IN GRATITUDE
Experience joy even with your practical belongings. For instance, you can express gratitude for the information that your smart phone provides you and therefore feel a “spark of joy” whenever you use it.
STAY IN GRATITUDE (EVEN WHEN DISCARDING)
Say ‘thank you’ to the items you choose to discard. Even though you no longer wish to keep an item, it had “sparked joy” for you at one point and has shown you what you no longer want.
IT'S ALL ABOUT SELF-LOVE
When you cherish the things around you, you begin to cherish yourself. View yourself through what you own and how you treat your belongings.
EMBRACE THE OPEN SPACE
Keep discovering what sparks joy for you every day. Try new experiences and interact with different people. You will learn more about yourself in the process and stumble upon something or someone who brings you a lot of happiness.
DON'T STOP AT JUST 'THINGS'
Apply the question: “Does it spark joy for you?” to relationships, work, activities, and all other areas of life. Time is finite and you should spend it with the people you love, doing the things that uplift you.
MAKE IT HABBIT
Perform a small ritual or routine each day that sparks joy for you. For instance, I strike a small tuning fork, called an onsa, to cleanse the atmosphere of the room.
